Harking back to the speakeasy clubs of the 1920s and 1930s, The Spyglass Gypsies faithfully recreate the sounds of the Parisian ‘Hot Clubs’, in particular, the stylings of gypsy guitarist Django Reinhardt and the Hot Club de France. Part of the 2019, Roaring 20s Festival.

Combining traditional ‘Manouche’ repertoire with tasteful originals and gypsy-influenced modern classics, The Spyglass Gypsies deliver an energetic and playful performance, displaying all the subtleties and nuances of a highly communicative and intuitive ensemble, while still retaining the fire and passion of the gypsy jazz style. Guitarist Richard Ashby and saxophonist Loretta Palmeiro co-founded the ensemble after time spent in Europe studying and performing with gypsy musicians. The addition of top Sydney jazz performers Andrew Scott (accordion), Cameron Jones (guitar) and Shannon Haritos (double bass) has enabled the group to establish themselves as one of the leading ensembles in Australian Gypsy Jazz.
