Le Hot Club de Katoomba | Roaring 20s Festival

As part of the 2019 Roaring 20s Festival, The Palais Royale’s ‘Nombre 230′ series is embracing the fun, freedom and energy of France in the 20s. The 20s are often referred to as The Roaring 20s’ in America, and ‘The Golden Age’ in Germany, however, the 20s in France were ‘années folles’, France’s ‘crazy years’ in French). These crazy years came in “with a bang of bad booze, flappers with bare legs, jangled morals and wild weekends. The parties were bigger…the pace was faster…and the morals were looser.” Well, thankfully those days have passed, but in the spirit of those ‘fleeting days of folly’, come along to Palais Royale every Saturday night in February for some Roaring 20s jazz & cocktails.

This week, Julien Clement and Simon Watts will be dropping in for some French 20s classics and some gypsy jazz fun.

Australian violinist Simon Watts (String Theories, Skarrat & Watts) and French singer/guitarist Julien Clement (Belle Jar, Julien Joel Clement) team up for an evening of classic French chansons and an assortment of Hot Club swing jazz in the style of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli.

Simon picked up the violin at the age of seven and has never stopped playing. After a classical training Simon was restless to explore other styles of music from the music of his Irish ancestry to jazz swings & steamy tangos and his main aim, when playing, is to bring pleasure to his audience and leave them wanting more.

Julien is a singer/songwriter & guitarist known for his many projects covering a wide style of music, here in Katoomba. For the Hot Club de Katoomba, he goes back to his French roots, keen to communicate the passion, drama and humour of French classic songs from the 20s and onwards.

Come along this Saturday to Palais Royale from 5:30pm for ‘cocktail hour’ with Rachel and John.
