Kate Sutton Ceramics Studio, Wentworth Falls, Blue Mountains
Free Entry – Everyone Welcome

Step inside the creative world of Blue Mountains ceramic artist Kate Sutton as she opens the doors of her Wentworth Falls studio for a special weekend of art, creativity, conversation and community as part of Australian Ceramics Open Studios 2026.

For two days, visitors will have the opportunity to explore a working ceramics studio, discover beautiful handmade pottery, learn about the fascinating processes involved in creating ceramic art and meet the artist behind the work.

Whether you’re a passionate ceramics collector, an aspiring potter, a fellow artist or simply curious about the remarkable things that can be created from clay, Kate’s open studio promises an inspiring and welcoming experience.

This year marks Kate’s first participation in Australian Ceramics Open Studios, and she is inviting visitors to share in the creative atmosphere of her workspace while enjoying refreshments, demonstrations and a relaxed introduction to her artistic practice.

Meet the Artist – Kate Sutton

Based in Wentworth Falls, Kate Sutton is a formally trained ceramic artist whose practice explores the powerful connections between art, storytelling and social engagement.

Drawing on more than twenty years of experience in strategic storytelling and previous work in the humanitarian sector, Kate brings a distinctive perspective to contemporary ceramics. Her work often explores complex human experiences, social issues and the ways that objects can communicate powerful narratives.

Her technical expertise spans a wide range of ceramic disciplines, including advanced wheel-throwing, hand-building, slip casting and the development of custom glazes.

This combination of technical skill and conceptual exploration allows Kate to create an unusually diverse body of work, ranging from beautifully considered functional pottery to thought-provoking sculptural forms and installations.

Her wider artistic practice includes works such as New World Order, a globe-like ceramic sculpture reflecting on contemporary social pressures, and Mother Palestine, an installation incorporating handmade vessels and thousands of small clay beads as an act of remembrance.

Through these projects, Kate explores how the tactile and enduring qualities of ceramics can provide a powerful medium for reflection, memory and connection.

Alongside her personal artistic practice, Kate contributes to the wider creative community through collaborative projects, large-scale throwing workshops and ceramic firing services.

What to Expect During the Open Studio Weekend

Visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy a range of experiences throughout the weekend.

Original Handmade Ceramics for Sale

Discover a selection of Kate’s original ceramic creations, including everyday functional tableware, sculptural pieces and unique handmade objects.

With Christmas approaching, the open studio is also an opportunity to find distinctive, one-of-a-kind gifts created by a local Blue Mountains artist.

Each handmade piece reflects the individuality of its maker, offering something far more personal than mass-produced ceramics.

Behind the Scenes of a Working Studio

Explore the environment where Kate’s ceramic works take shape, from initial ideas and raw clay through to the various stages of forming, decorating, glazing and firing.

Visitors will be able to see works in progress alongside selected exhibition pieces, gaining insight into the time, patience and technical expertise involved in the ceramic process.

Meet the Artist and Learn About Ceramics

Kate will be available throughout the weekend for informal conversations and demonstrations, sharing insights into her creative process and answering questions about techniques, materials and the challenges of working with clay.

For anyone curious about pottery, this is an excellent opportunity to learn directly from an experienced ceramicist in a friendly and approachable setting.

Tea, Cake and Creative Conversation

An open studio should be as much about people as it is about pottery.

Visitors are invited to enjoy a cup of tea and homemade sweet treats prepared by Martyn Haigh, while chatting with Kate and fellow visitors about art, making and the creative life of the Blue Mountains.

There is no need to rush. Drop in, have a look around, enjoy the atmosphere and celebrate the pleasure of handmade art.

Part of Australian Ceramics Open Studios 2026

Kate’s open studio forms part of the nationwide Australian Ceramics Open Studios, coordinated annually by The Australian Ceramics Association.

Held across Australia on 7 and 8 November 2026, this popular initiative brings ceramic artists, potters and sculptors together for a weekend celebrating the creativity, craftsmanship and diversity of contemporary Australian ceramics.

Studios throughout the country will welcome visitors for demonstrations, exhibitions, informal conversations and opportunities to purchase original ceramic work directly from the artists who create it.

In the Blue Mountains, the event provides a wonderful opportunity to discover the extraordinary depth of ceramic talent within the region.

Visitors are encouraged to make a weekend of it by exploring other participating studios, meeting local makers and discovering the many different approaches to this ancient and continually evolving art form.

Celebrate Local Creativity in Wentworth Falls

One of the special pleasures of visiting an artist’s studio is seeing the creative process in its natural environment.

Unlike a conventional gallery exhibition, an open studio offers a personal glimpse into the everyday realities of artistic practice: the tools, experiments, works in progress and small discoveries that eventually become finished objects.

Kate Sutton’s open studio promises exactly that kind of experience, combining an appreciation of traditional craftsmanship with contemporary artistic thinking and a generous spirit of community engagement.

Whether you’re looking for a beautiful handmade ceramic piece, some inspiration for your own creative pursuits or simply an enjoyable arts experience in the Blue Mountains, this is a wonderful opportunity to connect with a talented local maker.

Come along, meet Kate, enjoy some tea and cake, and discover the creative possibilities of clay.
